.. : =: A clean list is a decision, not a hope
List hygiene catches the contacts that quietly erode deliverability, before they cost you a send.
Most list problems are not bounces waiting to happen. They are patterns that were already visible before the first send. List hygiene is where Bounceless looks for those patterns: structural issues, duplicate records, and address categories that behave differently from a normal inbox, so your team can act on them before they show up as a deliverability incident.
What list hygiene checks for
A hygiene pass runs alongside verification and looks at the list as a whole, not just one address at a time:
- Format and structure. Malformed addresses, stray whitespace, and encoding artifacts that a manual CSV export tends to accumulate.
- Duplicates and near-duplicates. Exact repeats and common typo variants of the same mailbox, so a single contact does not get counted (or emailed) more than once.
- Role and shared mailboxes. Addresses like
info@,support@, orsales@are flagged as their own category. They are not automatically invalid, but they behave differently: lower open rates, higher chance of landing in a shared inbox no one reads. - Disposable and temporary domains. Addresses created for a single sign-up, not for an ongoing relationship, are surfaced separately from long-term mailbox risk.
- Free and major webmail concentration. A list weighted heavily toward personal webmail providers carries a different risk profile than a B2B list of company domains, and we call that out rather than treating every domain the same.
Why this sits next to verification, not inside it
A raw verification result answers one question: does this specific mailbox look real right now? Hygiene answers a different one: does this list, as a whole, look like something worth sending to? A list can be 100% syntactically valid and still be full of role accounts and duplicates that quietly cap your engagement metrics. Keeping the two checks distinct, instead of collapsing them into one score, is what lets us tell you which problem you have, not just that you have one.
Built on the same decision layer
Hygiene findings feed the same Pre-Send Decision that verification results do. A duplicate flag, a role-account flag, and a low-confidence mailbox check are all reason codes attached to a contact, not separate reports you have to reconcile by hand. That means your suppression policy (send, review, or hold) reads the whole picture at once instead of stitching together two disconnected tools.
What we do not claim
Hygiene checks reduce the number of structural surprises in a list; they do not guarantee a bounce-free send. A domain can pass every hygiene check and still fail at send time for reasons outside any verification engine’s visibility: a full mailbox, a temporary server outage, a spam filter having a bad day. We would rather tell you that up front than sell certainty we cannot back.
How it fits your workflow
List hygiene runs through the same CSV upload or API call as verification. There is no separate tool to learn. Reason codes come back attached to each contact, so a role-account flag or a duplicate flag reads the same way as a mailbox-confidence flag in your existing pipeline.
Does list hygiene replace email verification?
No. Hygiene checks run alongside verification: they catch structural and behavioral problems (duplicates, role accounts, disposable domains) that a single valid/invalid check does not surface on its own.
Will hygiene checks remove contacts automatically?
No. Bounceless flags and explains; your team or your policy decides what happens next. We do not silently delete rows from your list.
What happens to role accounts like info@ or support@?
They are flagged as a distinct category with their own reason code, not folded into a generic invalid bucket. Whether to suppress them is a policy call, not ours to make for you.
